Verizon, AT&T and other carriers reportedly won't sell Google's rumored Nexus 6P and 5X

According to a new report, Sprint (NYSE: S), T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS), Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T (NYSE: T) won't sell the new Nexus smartphones that Google is widely expected to announce during a media event tomorrow. Instead, Google will sell the devices through its website only.

According to a report from Android Police, the new Nexus phones from Google will be sold via Google's online store, much like Google did when it announced its first Nexus device. The publication reported that Google is using the launch to raise the profile of its Google Store, where it will reportedly sell its other devices like Chromebooks and smart watches.

Google's previous Nexus smartphones have been sold by wireless carriers, such as Motorola's Nexus 6.

If the report proves accurate, the action would follow a similar trend by other smartphone vendors to draw customers into their own storefronts for access to the latest phones. For example, Apple recently announced its new iPhone Upgrade Program that starts at $32 per month and allows users to upgrade their iPhone every year. Customers who opt for Apple's new iPhone Upgrade Program get an unlocked iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus with the Tier 1 carrier of their choice, and Apple's AppleCare+ warranty service. The program essentially pulls customers away from wireless carriers' own smartphone upgrade plans.

According to a number of Android Police reports, Google tomorrow will unveil the latest devices in its Nexus program, which run the pure version of its Android operating system. The two new Nexus phones are expected to come from LG Electronics and Huawei.

The LG-made 5.2-inch phone will be called the Nexus 5X while the Huawei-made gadget with a 5.7-inch screen will be dubbed the Nexus 6P. The phones will run Android 6.0 "Marshmallow," which includes a new feature called "Now on Tap," which gives users information about people and places and lets them take actions based on the context of what they are viewing in mobile apps.

The 16 GB Nexus 5X will reportedly sport a price tag of $379.99. And the 32 GB Nexus 6P will reportedly cost $499.99.

The phones will compete directly against Apple's new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus and Samsung's new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.
