Sprint, GE Healthcare partner on wireless networks

Sprint Nextel and GE Healthcare won a multi-million dollar contract to provide converged wireless networks, services, software and infrastructure for six Texas hospitals. The move is the latest by Sprint to try to diversify its wireless business.

Sprint won the contract from Methodist Healthcare, which has 24 facilities around the San Antonio area. The services will allow hospital caregivers to communicate throughout the system and will provide remote access to patients' vital signs. The voice and data services will cover about 1.9 million square feet, according to the companies.

The wireless system also includes GE Carescape Enterprise Access, which GE describes as a platform to distribute patient information and allow for wireless patient monitoring. Hospital workers will use more than 800 Sprint handsets running on Carescape.

Sprint has been working to broaden its wireless services portfolio. It provides wireless services for Amazon.com's Kindle and recently struck a deal with Ford Motor Co. to put in-dashboard computers that connect to Sprint's network in Ford vehicles.
