Page Plus MVNO launches $12 monthly plan

In the prepaid pricing game of "how low can you go?" Page Plus Cellular is undercutting rivals with a new $12 per month plan, its cheapest monthly plan ever.

The carrier, an MVNO of Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), just launched its new "12" plan, which provides 250 voice minutes, 250 text messages and 10 MB of data for just $12 per month. The new Page Plus undercuts the cheapest offerings from MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) and Cricket provider Leap Wireless (NASDAQ:LEAP), but Leap and Metro also include unlimited messaging and mobile Web access.

Page Plus also offers a range of other options, including its "55" plan, which offers unlimited voice minutes, unlimited text and picture messages and 500 MB of data for $55 per month. The MVNO also recently lowered the price of its "Unlimited Talk n Text" monthly plan from $44.95 to $39.95 per month. The Unlimited Talk n Text plan includes unlimited voice minutes, unlimited text and picture messages and 20 MB of data.

In an interview with FierceWireless, Denny Scher, Page Plus' marketing manager, said the company decided to introduce the $12 plan because of the continued weak state of the overall economy. "People are still looking for ways to cut back and save money," he said. "It's a niche market, granted. This is not for everybody, but for certain people and for parents that want to control the usage of their kids, it's a great little bundle plan."

Page Plus offers four phones on its website from Kyocera, ranging from $40 to $100. Unlike MetroPCS or Leap, the MVNO does not offer any smartphones.
