Position Description
The Director of Device Development will have tactical and strategic responsibility for managing a team focused on the development, launch and maintenance of a mobile device portfolio. Will work with external vendors and internal stakeholders to manage development of a diverse device portfolio inclusive of development, certification, launch and life-cycle management activities as well as ensuring overall compliance to requirements. Candidate must understand the handset development and industrial design process, have carrier level experience with device OEMs and have had significant experience in negotiating with device vendors. Will work collaboratively with financial resources in modeling, rationalizing and negotiating device requirements, timelines and designs. This position will have significant input into the strategic planning and roadmaps. This position will interface with vendor and partners on a regular basis.
Position Responsibilities:
Manage team of mobile device SMEs, project managers and device certification personnel.
Ability to participate in, lead, motivate and manage large cross functional teams in a matrix organization.
Negotiation skills will be highly leveraged in driving to consensus on product scope, definition, requirements, financial analysis, certification and launch activities.
Develop/refine and present device roadmaps and business cases to decision makers
Create or oversee the creation of various device deliverables ¿ device roadmaps, device requirements, project plans, device reporting, status reports, etc.
Represent the company on assigned strategic initiatives
Participate in budgeting and strategic planning activities.
Research and understand primary customer needs, cost/benefit trade-offs of various implementation options, and translate into tangible roadmaps and deliverables.
Possess strong planning capabilities, communications skills, presentation skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to effectively influence internal team members through consensus building and ability to get results through others.
Ability to manage multiple, large to very large-scale projects at one time.
Strong initiative and the ability to drive and oversee the device development initiatives to completion with limited supervision.
Qualifications
BS, BA or BE degree requiredMBA is preferred
Generally 10+ years of experience in related field, including several years in a management/supervisory capacity.
Significant experience in managing and directing teams focused on device portfolio development activities
3+ years of carrier level device development experience in Wireless Industry.
3+ years of significant carrier experience and knowledge of mobile operating systems, mobile applications and interfacing with device vendors
Solid working knowledge of the wireless and wireline telecommunications industry
Significant experience with wireless client and application development activities.
Experience interfacing effectively with external vendors/partners and industry peers required.
Experience managing multiple concurrent initiatives, programs and projects at one time.
Capacity for strategic thinking and business development.
Willingness to travel 25% – 50% of the time.
